i have some friends who are really into the whole sticker/street art scene here. one of them gave me an assignment. he handed me a stack of priority mail stickers and told me to draw something for him. keep in mind that he gave me homework, on my way home from school, after i had given him a cake. what a jerk! (just kidding. he’s a good kid.) so i’m playing. friend homework is way more fun than school homework.
not going to lie. i really want this as a tattoo.
edible midterms are the best midterms. i finally had some of this cake tonight after spending the evening drinking with my best friend. i have to say that my team made a delicious lemon mousse and blueberry cake.
back to school
hey folks!
i’m one week into spring quarter now. you can look forward to some pictures of european cakes and tortes, artisan breads, and latin cuisine. to start you off, here are some cinnamon sticky buns that i made in breads last week.

they were delicious. although i had one and immediately got a sugar headache. so i gave all the ones i took home from class to friends.
an old favorite

i made smores cupcakes today! i know, it’s not anything new. but, after having a break from school, i finally felt like making something today! so that’s exciting! although sad that it takes being away from a kitchen for almost two weeks to make me want to make anything. anyway. emerald city comic-con was this weekend and as i am broke, i couldn’t go. but a friend went. and got me a sketch of my favorite character (jamie) from one of my favorite webcomics (girls with slingshots) from my internet crush (danielle corsetto). so i felt like i had to make something awesome for him in return. conveniently, this kid lives down the hall from my best friend who happens to love marshmallow frosting, so i’m almost rid of all the cupcakes i made today. i have another little box of them to take to my seattle mom tomorrow, but then they’re all gone. yay! my favorite part of making things is not having them at home afterwards. i want to take a few pictures and then be done with them without having to throw them out.
pizza day!
after taking our practical last week in american regional, we still had a day to do something before taking our written this week. so it was pizza day! i made three pizzas.

garlic bechamel, artichoke, spinach, pine nuts, goat cheese

herb oil, mushroom, chicken, red onion, red bell pepper, jalapeno, mozzarella and parmesan

garlic and jalapeno bechamel, mushroom, black olive, red onion, pine nuts, red pepper flakes, mozzarella and parmesan. this was my favorite. it had a good kick to it.
finals, part 2

daikon cakes with spicy plum sauce, ahi poke, spam musubi

saimin, char sui, teriyaki meat sticks (yeah, that’s really what that recipe was called)

calamari salad

pineapple fritter
our day on hawaii was the day of our final practical for american regional, so this is what we made. yeah. i’m in culinary school and cooked spam on a final. it was delicious! so were the pineapple fritters. but you can pan fry or deep fry pretty much anything and it will be good.
i love this city!
it’s spring break for me! and that means that i have no academic responsibilities for a bit. yesterday was absolutely beautiful. sunny, not too chilly. had some drinks after class with my best friend, went shopping for a dress for hillary’s wedding (i got a lovely little springy dress for cheap), and then had more some more drinks.

we were walking back to my place and looked towards the water and saw an absolutely gorgeous sunset. plans changed from drinking in my apartment to drinking on the roof. so we went up to the roof and this is what we got to enjoy with our drinks and snacks.

we had a lovely little spread. we had gotten some bread, artichoke dip, and tzatziki. and, of course, our true love, tanqueray.

then the neighbor who lives on the top floor came out and joined us. he brought sangria, baba ganoush, and quinoa and tabouleh stuffed tomatoes, all of which were delicious. once the sun had set completely and it was a little too cold to be hanging out on the roof, he invited us in for more drinks and snacks. i saw a board game in his apartment called the crazy cat lady game. so of course we played it.
overall, a very good night. best friend time, good food, good drinks, spectacular views. i couldn’t have planned a better first night of spring break. i love this city so much!

finals, part 1

fresh fruit tart: sweet tart dough, vanilla pastry cream, fruit

chocolate souffle

pain au chocolat/croissants/palmiers (made with puff pastry), cream puffs (made with pate a choux), individual gateau st honore (puff pastry base, cream puffs, held together with caramel, whipped cream)
this was all part of my baking and pastry final. i made souffle! it was pretty good. i was most excited about the fruit tart. i would have brought it home, in fact i had planned on it and had asked chef if it was ok to keep it in the reach-in in the pastry kitchen until after i got out of class that afternoon rather than leaving it in a locker all day. she said sure. and then she stole it! oh well. it’s not like i needed to bring a tart home. (see, it’s funny because tart is a pastry item, but can also refer to a person of questionable morals.)
so that’s the pastry final. i’ll add my american regional final soon.
creme brulee
i got to play with a torch this morning!
